  • App Review: HellFire by Astraware

HellFire, released just a few days ago on the 21st of January, is a game that offers the player several types of helicopter missions to complete.  As the pilot of either an American or Soviet era helicopter you must complete certain tasks on each mission.  For example, on the easier level you must go into enemy territory, defend yourself, destroy enemy gunners, pick up your captured comrades and return to base.  Each level complete progresses to another, more difficult level and there are even different types of missions to choose from and the more you play the more missions are unlocked.

HellFire provides the user with a rich, visual view into a 3D battlefield. Front and center is your helicopter, which you control by moving the device (ie: accelerometer) and there are touch-bottons on the screen to control your weapons (fire and weapon select) and a slider to control altitude. There is also a “radar” view or HUD in the top-right corner of the screen which helps you navigate towards your enemy.

At first I found the controls to be overly sensitive but once I turned down the accelerometer sensitivity (via config screen) manouvering the helicopter became much easier.  As stated earlier, the scenery and effects are very well done and provides an excellent graphical experience for the player.

At first I really enjoyed HellFire, but it quickly became boring for me and since I stopped playing it I haven’t had a desire to go back to playing it.  Now, having said that, it’s a keeper for my iPhone for the occassional 2 minute mission and to show off its graphics to friends but that’s about it for me.

HellFire is $4.99 in the iTunes App Store
