App Review: LightBike (full version) by Pankaku Inc. [Video]

So, what is a light bike? Even after reading the information on it in the iTunes App Store I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this game. However, for 99 cents I purchased, downloaded and launched the app. The bad news is that the instructions for the game are limited and I wasn’t really sure what I was doing for the first few rounds. The good news is that the game is easy to figure out. It wasn’t long before I understood what the goal was. The difficulty with this app comes in the speed of the game play. It is very fast-paced. If your attention lapses for even half a second, you’re gone.

In a game of Light Bike, you are driving a motor bike on a square surface with three other people. Everywhere you drive, your bike leaves behind a wall of light. If you or any of the other bikes crash into your own or someone else’s wall, you lose. The object of the game is to drive your bike in such a way that you are the last bike left driving.  Watch out for the edges of the square surface you are driving on, though.  You can fall off.  The bike drives at a constant speed forward and you turn the bike 90 degrees to the left or right by tapping the left and right sides of the screen.  There is also a boost button in the center of the bottom of the screen.  This button gives you a boost of speed allowing you to cut in front of another bike.  There is also a timer. If there’s more than one bike left when time is up, it is declared a draw.

So, what do you gain by buying the full version?  You gain a medium and hard level of difficulty and the ability to play 2, 3, and 4 player games.  A two player game can be played easily on the same iPhone or iPod Touch.  You turn the device sideways and the screen is split in half.  You and your opponent play on the same screen. For 3 players, you must connect via Wi-Fi to another device for the third person.  Four people can play on just 2 devices.

It took me awhile to get used to the fast pace of the game and figure out the best ways to cut off my opponents. However, for the price, it is a fun little app that you can play alone or with friends whenever you have a minute.

LightBike is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store until February 10th.

LightBike also has a free version in the iTunes App Store.  (This version only features single player and easy play modes.)
