App Review: Photo Spot by Nexx Studio

If you have ever searched for hidden objects in a picture or read a “Where’s Waldo” book, you are ready for Photo Spot.  The premise is very simple.  In each level you are presented with two pictures, which at first glance look identical.  You must find the four differences between the two pictures before time runs out.  When you find a difference, tap it and it is circled in both pictures.  When I first started playing this game, I didn’t find it very difficult.  However, it did get harder as the game progressed.  I thought maybe I could get some of the differences circled on the screen by simply tapping around at random.  I was pleased to see that random tapping didn’t really work.  In fact, each incorrect tap on the screen diminishes your time and after repeated attempts to “cheat” the system I came to the conclusion that you’re way better off actually finding the differences yourself.

Some of the differences between the pictures such as an object that is missing from one picture may be easy to spot, but you have to keep your eye out for very subtle differences such as slightly different spacing of objects or even slightly different sizes of the same object in the two pictures.  I also found myself wishing sometimes that I could zoom in on the pictures for a closer look.  The screen on an iPhone or iPod Touch is only so large and squeezing two pictures into one screen can make the differences hard to see.  You have to have good eye sight to play this game.  If you are stumped and you see time running out, you can ask for a hint.  At the start of the game, three hints appear as conversation balloons at the top of the screen.  Tap on one of these and one of the differences will be circled for you.  Don’t use them lightly, though.  Once you run out, there is no more help.  Try to last as long as you can and beat your old high score.

On another note, having a 4 year old around makes us want to try out apps on him.  He caught on to the game quickly and as we played together it was often him that was finding the differences.  However, once he figured out that the hint button would reveal the answer he was often just resorting to the hints rather than finding the differences.

Photo Spot is a fun game appropriate for all ages that will challenge you to examine what you think you see more closely.

Photo Spot is in the iTunes App Store for $0.99.
