hotfieldsquare1 150x150 App Review: HotField by C2MatrixHotfield by C2Matrix is an addictive scrolling shooter game.  Flying your ship, you must make your way through each level and clear the enemy ships, tank, canon towers, and bosses that are trying to destroy you.  When you start the game, you have seven lives and a ship that can only shoot one bullet at a time.  Luckily, your ship continually fires so that you can concentrate your efforts on dodging bullets and steering.  As you progress through the level, the game automatically scrolls forward at a fixed rate.  You can move not only horizontally, but vertically as well.

One of the things that makes this game great is all of the options for game play.  There are 3 different ships that you can choose from, 5 different modes of play, 2 options for controls, and the option to record your game and watch it back later.  Four of the game modes represent difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard, and mad).  The fifth is Boss Mode.  In this mode, you only play against the bosses in the game.  As far as controls, the game defaults to a vertical game screen where you control your ships flight path by moving your finger around the screen.  With these controls, a double tap on the screen will slow your enemy and a double touch (touching the screen with two fingers simultaneously) will fire your lasers.  The second control mode can be accessed from the options menu.  If selected, the screen rotates 90 degrees to create a vertical rectangle in landscape mode.  The remaining space on the screen is used for typical video game controls.  On the left is a toggle button to control the direction of your ship.  On the right are a “A” button, “C” button, and a “B” or back button.  In this mode, you use the buttons to perform the functions that double tap and double touch performed in the other mode.  In the playing that I did with this app, I found that I preferred using the buttons to the double tap/touch, but I had a hard time steering my ship with the controller.  Also, the screen is much smaller if you rotate it.  Unless, you are a whiz at using a controller, I would recommend using the default controls.

To help you destroy the enemy, there are a few things that you will want to collect as you move through the levels.  As you destroy enemies, they will often leave something behind.  Several of the enemies leave “stars” behind.  These stars can be collected to earn more lives.  To attract the stars to your ship, you can double tap the screen and hold your finger.  You can also pick up laser and power-up bonuses.  The power-ups increase the number of bullets that your ship fires at a time and the strength of the bullets.  The laser bonuses help to build up the strength of your laser for the next time you want to fire it.  Unfortunately, you cannot fire the laser an unlimited number of times.  Each time you use it, it uses up energy from your laser meter.  To fire it again, you must wait for the laser meter to rise.

At the end of each level that you complete, you can save your game and come back to it later.  You can also upload your score at the end of your game.  There is a top ten online scores list.

HotField is a very well-written, well-designed shooting game.  It is challenging and addicting.  There are plenty of levels and bosses to keep you busy and having fun for a long time.

HotField is $2.99 in the iTunes App Store.
