textfreesquare1 150x150 App Review: Textfree Unlimited by Pinger Inc.Like all of you Infinite SMS lovers out there, I was sad to see Google shut it down this week.  When I heard the news, I started searching for another app that I could use to send free texts using my iPod Touch.  Much to my dismay, most of the apps that I found in the iTunes App Store that claimed to offer this capability were only one or two star apps.  I didn’t want to mess with something that was only going to work some of the time or have quirks that I would have to deal with constantly.  Then, I stumbled upon Textfree Unlimited.  With a 3 1/2 star rating in the App Store, I figured it was probably my best bet, but a little on the expensive side. Then I discovered the Lite version.  After speaking with a representative from Pinger Inc., I found that the two versions have only a couple differences.  She told me that Textfree Lite, “… works exactly the same as the Textfree Unlimited app, just that it has a 15-message limit per calendar day, and it has ads.  Otherwise, it works exactly the same.”  So, I gave the Lite version a try and wasn’t disappointed.

Textfree is easy to setup and get texting with.  The first thing you do when you launch the app is set up a nickname for yourself.  Then, you are ready to go.  Tap on the icon in the upper right hand side of the screen to start a text.  Enter in a mobile number and type your message.  Sending a text through the app and the replies that you get back are free.  Now, what happens if someone else initiates the text?  If someone from another mobile number texts you, it does carry the normal charges for you.  However, there are a few settings that you can change under the options menu to change that.

Under options you can turn on email notification, which allows the app to send you an email notification when you receive a text after you have closed the app.  Simply enter in the email address that comes to your iPhone or iPod Touch.  Then, make sure you turn on the new email sound on your device.  The app will then send you a confirmation email with a link that you must click on.   Also, in the options menu, you can turn on the textfree to textfree capability.  When you flip the switch to on, the app will ask for the phone number associated with your iPhone.  The app will then send a text (this one will have normal charges) with a confirmation code that you must enter into the app to confirm your phone number.  Unfortunately, the need for a phone number rules out the textfree to textfree option for iPod Touch users.  Once this option is turned on, you can send texts to and receive texts from other textfree users free of charge.  The only problem with this setup is that if you get a text when the app is closed, the only way you will get notified of the text is through your email.  In all fairness, this problem only exists because it is not yet possible to rectify it.  Apple does not allow apps to notify you of anything when they are not open.  The good news is that the emails that you receive to notify you of a text contain an link that you can tap on to automatically launch the app and pull up the text.

There are a couple more things to be aware of in using this app.  First and most important, is that the main difference between the two versions of Textfree is that the Lite version only allows you to send 15 texts per day.  The paid version allows you to send an unlimited number of texts.  Second, right now you cannot use the app in landscape mode.  Thus, you have to use the smaller keyboard, but that is not a big deal.  Third, as with all other texting apps, iPod Touch users must be on a Wi-Fi network to send or receive any texts.

If you are looking for a good app for free texting, Textfree seems to fit the bill.  It is quick and easy to use.  Textfree Unlimited is a little on the pricey side, but probably a must have for those who text a lot.

Textfree Lite is free.

At first this app was good i would get an reply fast but ever since they gav it an update it hasnt been work the same i guess they added to much stuff and made it really slow and i will maybe get the reply within a week or so and i bought the unlimited textfree app it was a waste of my money

    [Please, don't use all caps]

  4. Kevin says:

I downloaded the unlimited, I’ve sent over 1,000 texts. It works pretty well, except after I downloaded software 3.0 its been asking me to confirm crap that I somehow cant??

  5. Rob says:

We’ve been using Textfree for a while even under 3.0. Not sure what you have to confirm that you can’t…

  6. Ruben says:

This seems to be a pretty big issue here – Ever since the 3.0 update of TextFree Unlimited, almost every one I know and have read who have that version, including myself, are having a real bad problem when it comes to replying speeds. Before I updated, the texts would just roll in minutes or even seconds after I sent one. But now with the 3.0 version, I’m getting my replies at around 10-30 MINUTES from the actual time it was sent.
I’m not sure what’s going on with Pinger but the only thing keeping me from downgrading it somehow is because I have my own permanent address which is more than great. Hopefully there’ll be an update that’ll fix this horrible lag.

I don’t have this app but someone who does sends really bad texts to my phone using the nickname “cool” so i think this is a bad app and should be discontinued

  8. unhappy says:

This app is like eating a mouth full of sand. I get the following message several times a day “Sorry we can’t connect to the textfree servers. Please wait a little and try again.” This error on top of paying yearly for all those who bought unlimited after 6/17 is a gut shot. You would think after the price hike they could at least upgrade their servers. Oh and if you think it’s a 3g problem think again. I got that error 8 times in a row while having 5bars. This app needs an overhaul. It takes forever to load and I have the new 3Gs. This app is crap. Buyers beware!

  9. jared says:

I use this app when I am at work where there is a WiFi signal, but no phone signal. That way I always have access to texts.
I have run into the “sorry we cannot connect” error several times and the delay – both mentioned above. It’s a decent app- not perfect though.

  10. Krista says:

I want to find out how to find out how to find out who the sender is, my teenage daughter is receiving sexuals msgs. from a user with a address of just a bunch of different #’s @ I am not happy that a user doesnt have to ask me permission to receive these texts or show a profile and can say and do whatever to whoever. My child is 14 this is wrong for here to get this stuff on her phone and not be able to do anything about iit!!!

  11. Fred says:

I would remove the program right away!

  12. Alex says:

Ok someone has not read their homework there is this thing called push notifications that the application sends out when you have a text waiting for you. The options interface for this is located in Settings > Notifications (for this menu to appear u actually need the app installed and select that you want the notifications)> Textfree.

Other than that I would have to believe it is all good. I still do not understand if other people can add this to my contact in their phone so that I just receive the messages from text free instead of my normal carrier.

I just want to take down that damn messaging plan from AT&T its getting a little too expensive

  13. Hannah Anthony says:

This Application is AWESOMENESS!!!!!! I love it because alll I had to pay was $6.00 dollars for unlimited text!

  14. NA says:

  15. Rob says:

  16. Brian says:

I get the “sorry we cant connect to the textfree servers, please wait a little and try again.” error at least 20 times a day. I paid for this app, why doesn’t it work? On top of all this, the text gets sent anyway even WITH this error message.

  17. Tamara33 says:

  18. Soccer22 says:

Hi. Uh I was wondering. Are you able to text from this to a cell phone plan. Because one time I tried texting my friend who has this service on their Ipod and wasn’t able to connect. So do you know how this works? The numbers you get for people to text you. Or if you even can get/receive texts from cell phones. Thanks.

    ….Hope you can help..

  19. Nikki says:

Well I went over the 15 txt limit by two willthat cost me money?

  25. Gregory says:

The following message to was undeliverable.
    The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 – Unknown address error 550-’Specified address was invalid:’

    What does this mean???

  26. Junaid says:

How do i text my friend if we both have ipods. if we cant than this app is lame. And dont call me dumb if i asked a dum question.

  27. panda says:

you know if you put ur number under the text free network that routes your texts to your ipod if ur friend is useing text free to how do you get it to reroute back to your phone???? because now its still like trying to verify and i cant because i cant get the text on my phone and i want my texts to go back to my phone

  28. Rob says:

@junaid – just setup two accounts with, then use your friends textfree username and they use your textfree username. My wife and I do it this way and it works just fine.

  29. Nikki says:

You can’t get txt back unless ur friend retypes in ur address and they cannot directly reply. This app is so stupid. By the way u can send it to another textfree user by going to the abc option and typing in their address. U can also use it in landscape. I don’t k ow I ur trying to give it a bad name. It seems like u r.

  30. Deedogger says:

Hey my iPod has that textfree thin I love it but does it cost for me to text my friends that don’t have textfree or does it cost them

  31. Liz says:

  33. Ilizea says:

alright I got the app the other day and it works really well but one of my questions is that does it charge on the wifi that your using with it? I don’t want my Internet bill too go up or anything.

  34. Thecartuner says:

  37. Nicole says:

This app is great… I have read some of the problems and have only run into one… someone out of the country i lived in called me through the phone numbers now added, so I blocked them…. thanks to the new update, you can block people and they will never be able to contact that address ever again. So, you should all get this app…. :)
