We’ve been meaning to write about Night Stand for some time now, but since we recently received a request to review iNight Clock we decided a little shootout is in order.

nightstandvsnightclock2 150x100 App Reviews: Night Stand vs. iNight ClockNight Stand by SpoonJuice, released back in November of last year as a free app (now $1.99), has grown to be the standard of clock apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch.  It features a great digital display with changeable colors and a very cool flip display (my favorite).  The app has a built in alarm clock where you can choose one of eight alarm sounds.  Once the app is running it will disable the auto lock of the device so that you can glance at it at anytime (you’ll want it plugged into the charger to run it overnight).  The whole premise here is to mimic a bedside alarm clock and for that it does an excellent job.

nightstandvsnightclock6 150x100 App Reviews: Night Stand vs. iNight ClockiNight Clock by Hana Mobile, released on March 5th, is a near clone of Night Stand.  However, it does offer a few extra adjustments over Night Stand like snooze and the ability to adjust the color of the readout to whatever you want, literally.  The digital display is your typical digital readout and probably not quite as nice looking as Night Stand, and they definitely lack the cool flip clock theme or anything that would be as cool.  Unlike Night Stand, the alarm sound in iNight Clock is rather dreadful and cannot be changed.  So, I would not plan on using the alarm function with this app.

What both of these apps is missing is the ability for the user to choose a song from the iPod and play that instead of one of the included sounds.  Now, knowing that this function isn’t offered in the current version of the firmware, at the very least offer the ability to upload a song on to the app to play when the alarm goes off.  Night Stand has made an effort to include a list of sounds, but the list is still lacking some decent choices.

For this style of application there is just not that much functionality that would go into it.  However, if you’re looking for a carry-along clock for travel, then both of these apps will do the trick.  Remember that they are both nearly identical in their functions.  However, if you’re looking for an alarm clock to go with choice in alarm sounds and some very pleasing displays then Night Stand is the obvious choice.

Night Stand is $1.99 in the iTunes App Store.

iNight Clock is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store.

I used to love NighStand until last update and now it crashes overnight and made me late for work a couple times. That shouldn’t happen – EVER!

    iNight here I come!

Night stand app no longer allows change of secondary time zone. Most annoying. A function I really did like, please bring back secondary time zone clock.
