App Review: Treasures of Montezuma by Alawar Entertainment, Inc.
Treasures of Montezuma is a challenging game very similar to the popular Bejeweled. Being very familiar with Bejeweled, I figured I could just load this game on my iPod and start playing. However, no matter how I tried, I always seemed to run out of time on each level that I played. Then, I read the Help section of the menu. I was trying to accomplish the wrong goal.
In Treasures of Montezuma, you remove tokens from the game board by swapping two tokens to form a set of 3 or more tokens of the same color just like you do in Bejeweled. The goal in Treasures of Montezuma, however, is not to just remove tokens. You are trying to collect all of the gems before time runs out. The gems are in the center of some of the tokens on the game board. To collect a gem, you must remove the token that is holding the gem. Thus, you must prioritize your moves and not waste time removing tokens that don’t have gems.
For each level that you complete, you earn a star. These stars can be used to buy bonuses or power totems at the end of each level. These bonuses can help you clear tokens from the board. The bonuses appear on the board on tokens. To activate the bonus, you simply must remove that token. The power totems are activated when you remove two consecutive groups of tokens that are the same color. There are some tokens such as the ones wrapped in chains or the steel tokens are more difficult than others, if not impossible, to clear without the use of bonuses.
Treasures of Montezuma is a lot of fun and will keep you busy for hours. If you like Bejeweled, you will love this game.
Treasures of Montezuma is on sale for $0.99 in the iTunes App Store.
