App Review: ooTunes by Oogli LLC – Local Radio on Your iPhone
On occasion I like to listen to music at my desk at work. Typically I’d just listen to the iPod, but once in awhile an actual radio station is nice. So, I decided to look for a radio app for my iPhone that would allow me to do just that. I’ve been using the excellent free app, Pandora, but since I was looking for an app that could tune in my favorite local radio stations, that wasn’t going to work. I looked at several radio apps in the iTunes App Store starting with many of the free versions. After installing a few of the free radio apps, I quickly discovered that most of the free radio apps offered only a limited selection of stations (usually only one). That wasn’t going to work for me. So, I started to look at the paid ones.
After a cursory look at the paid apps, there were three that stood out as possible contenders: ooTunes [$3.99], Pocket Tunes Radio [$9.99], and Wunder Radio [$6.99].
I decided to take a chance and go for the cheaper of the three – ooTunes. ooTunes offers many great features for a radio app, including: easy search to find your favorite local (or distant) stations, over 10,000 available radio stations (3200 from the USA), pause and resume controls for live streams, a list of stations that you have listened to recently, favorites, lyrics, similar stations, a built in browser to cruise the web while listening to a station, and much more.
Using ooTunes, I was able to find all of my favorite local radio stations from the Salt Lake City area and a few I used to listen to back in Calgary. I couldn’t tell you if the list had every local station or not. However, if a station you are looking for is not in the list, the developers say you can email them, and they will usually add it within 24 hours. The quality of the audio is pretty much dependent upon what the originating station provides, but I found the sound quality to be more than adequate for my listening needs. Streams buffered and started playing pretty quickly over WiFi and 3G. I had no trouble using the app on AT&T’s 3G network here at home and at work.
ooTunes is a solid, well done, streaming radio app for iPhone or iPod Touch that met and exceeded my expectations.
