App Review: Leaf Bound by Pixel Stream, LLC
Tired of seeing monkeys in the App Store? Here is your chance to teach a couple of monkeys a lesson. Leaf Bound by Pixel Stream, LLC puts you in the shoes of Yuri as she tries to protect her land from evil robot monkeys that want to take over. That might sound a little corny to some people, but I found it could actually be pretty challenging and fun.
There are 8 levels in the game to complete. You can play them all sequentially in Campaign Mode, or you can pick and choose which ones you want to play in Arcade Mode. The levels do get progressively harder. So, it makes sense to start at the beginning and move forward from there. Also, the first time you launch Campaign Mode, you are given a quick walk-through of the game. This walk-through is not necessary, as the game is pretty easy to figure out, but it was somewhat helpful.
The idea behind the game is simple and the controls are easy to pick up. Your goal is to get to the top of the level and defeat the boss waiting for you there. There is a progress bar on the left side of the screen to let you know how you are doing. Yuri is always jumping. So, all you have to do is control where she lands. This is done by sliding your finger left and right at the bottom of the screen. Although, you can control Yuri from higher up on the screen, the lower you can keep your finger, the more of the screen you can see. You want to help Yuri land on leaves, ledges, and robot monkeys to work her way up to the top. If you miss a leaf, Yuri will fall until you are able to land her on something else. Also, the leaves disappear after Yuri jumps on them. So, it is best to keep moving up if you can.
The robot monkeys that you pass along your way, throw things at you. If these objects hit you, you lose some of your life. If you can, it is best to rid yourself of these pests by jumping on their heads. You can also gain back your life hearts by collecting objects along your way. When you manage to collect any three objects, it will refill your health by one heart. If you collect chilies and bottles of hot sauce, you can earn temporary invincibility, which can be very helpful.
When the progress bar at the left side of the screen fills up completely, you will have to face a major obstacle to win the level. These come in the form of bosses that you must kill. Each one is unique. At the beginning of the level, you will be given a hint that may help you to figure out how to defeat that particular enemy. So, pay attention.
Overall, Leaf Bound is a fun game that presents somewhat of a challenge. With only 8 levels to play, I can see the game getting old after a little while. However, for the small price tag attached it would be a fun addition to any game collection.
