One of the most successful app franchises in the App Store are those of the Tap Tap Revenge series.  Tapulous, the developer of the Tap Tap Revenge apps including Tap Tap Revenge 2, Tap Tap Revenge 3 and others, has been busy expanding the series with several band specific versions of their most popular game.  These band specific versions include many popular tracks from each band and so far they have released games with tracks from Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber.  Tap Tap Nirvana, or Nirvana Revenge, is the latest band specific version of this popular “guitar hero-esque” game for the iPhone.

Just as in many of the other versions of Tap Tap Revenge, you have four levels to chose from.  The easiest level, and pretty much the only one I could keep up with, has you tapping on just one chord at a time.  The chords come at you down the guitar strings and you must tap them on the right string at the right time.  Too soon or too late is no good and some you have to tap and hold. The hardest level – extreme – is for the tap pros that have awesome finger coordination and timing to keep up with all of the chords.

The best part of this app is the music.  Since I am a product of the “grunge” bands of the 90’s this app fits well into my likings as nirvana was a staple in my college years. When you first install the app be sure do do the full download of tracks, that way you can start tapping to your favorite track right away.  The tracks included on Tap Tap Nirvana are: All Apologies, Breed, Breed Live, Heart Shaped Box, In Bloom, Lithium, Lithium Live, Rape Me, Smells Like Teen Spirit, You Know You’re Right, Come As You Are, and Stay Away.

There are also two gameplay modes: Career and Battle Mode.  In Career, you play by yourself and try and beat your previous scores.  In Battle mode, you play head to head against someone that has the game installed on their own iDevice nearby.  In battle mode you connect to your friends device (or you can host a game and have him or her connect to your device) and you go head to head.  I didn’t get a chance to play this mode but for Nirvana or Tap Tap Revenge fans I can see how this would be a lot of fun.  The great thing here is that no wifi connection is needed as the device to device connection is done over bluetooth.

Similar to other Tap Tap Revenge hits, Nirvana Revenge doesn’t disappoint in both gameplay and the available tracks in the apps. If you’re a fan of other Tap Tap Revenge editions and also a fan of Nirvana then you can’t go wrong with this game.  Highly recommended for Nirvana fans and quitar hero fans.

What We Liked: Gameplay and Tracks by Nirvana.
What We Didn’t Like: Not all of Nirvana’s hits are on here, though that’s to be expected.
