bumblebeecybertoy1 150x150 App Review: Transformers CyberToy by GluDo you have a Transformers fanatic at your house?  If you do, the new Transformers CyberToy by Glu may be just the thing to put a smile on their face.  This app features Bumblebee, a very popular Autobot.  In Action Figure Mode, you can see Bumblebee transform on his own from a robot to a Chevy Camaro and back again by tapping on the icons at the left of the screen.  These icons can also make Bumblebee assume different poses.  You can even use the iPhone’s touch interface to spin Bumblebee around to see him from all angles.  As you turn him around, you will see light blue circles appear.  You can tap on these circles to shoot his guns, honk his horn, or turn on his headlights, among other things.

In Puzzle Mode, you transform Bumblebee by performing the tasks on the screen.  My biggest complaint with this app is that there are no instructions given on how the Puzzle Mode works.  It took quite a while for me to figure it out.  When the three dots appear on the screen, you must touch them all simultaneously to advance to the next step.  Other steps include dragging a circle along the path on the screen and tapping on dots to connect them all.  There are five difficulties in Puzzle Mode.  When you complete one level within the specified time limit, the next is unlocked.  With each increase in difficulty, more steps of Bumblebee’s transformation are left up to you.  The steps are not terribly difficult once you understand what you are supposed to do.  However, it does take some skill to perform all of the tasks quickly.

I especially loved the graphics and animations that this app has.  It is cool to see Bumblebee on the screen looking so life-like.  You can see his shoulders go up and down as he breathes in and out.  His movements and transformations are smooth and natural looking.  I gave the game to a 5-year old Transformers fan and he loved it.  Puzzle Mode did present a challenge, but, with practice, he was able to transform Bumblebee at the lower levels of difficulty.  Transformers CyberToy is a great app for all  Transformer fans.

Transformers CyberToy is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store.

App Review: Cops & Robbers by Glu

copsrobbers3 150x150 App Review: Cops & Robbers by GluCops & Robbers by Glu is an action packed obstacle game. You and your accomplice show up to your apartment just to find out that you have been kicked out until you can pay your rent. There is one problem.  You have no money and must steal money and diamonds to pay back your fat cat landlord. In each of the nine levels, there are a large amount of money, one diamond, and a par time to complete it in. To unlock the next level, you must either beat the game within the par time limit, collect all of the money, or steal the diamond.

There are two ways to control your thief; touch and tilt. In the tilt mode, you simply tilt back and forth to move and tap in the middle of the screen to jump. In the touch mode, you touch the sides to the screen to move and tap the center to jump. At the top of the screen in both control modes is a boost meter. To fill this meter, you must perform acrobatic tricks. Once there is juice in your meter, tap to boost your character’s speed for a limited time.

In each level, there is a forward view, in which the controls are basic. If you get too close to an object, you will fall and the cops will gain on you. If you fall into a hole, run into an old lady or cop, or let the cops get too close, you will get busted and will be taken back to the last checkpoint you passed. Your time, however, will not go back to what it was at the check point.  Instead, it will be added to your current time. If you climb up an alley way, the view will change to a side view. In this mode, you do not need to steer your character, but still must jump at the right time. The last view is a back view, the controls switch back to normal in this view. While you are running through the level, there will be a lit window. In this window is the diamond.  To get the diamond you will have to match the sequence on the paper to the prongs on the safe. To do this, tap the spring wait until it matches the picture.

While you are running, the cops chase after you. If you collect doughnuts, your player will have a huge speed increase. Collecting magnifying glasses gives you hints. If you run through hay or water, you will slow down. When the cops get closer, jail bars will appear on the sides on the screen as a warning. All you have to do is run a little faster and you’ll be okay. Other things to do include grinding on rails, swinging on bars, and rolling under pipes. After you complete a level, you can play as the cop and race against your thief’s best time. If you win, you will arrest the thieves and a new best time will be displayed for that level.

Cops & Robbers is an amazing game with great controls, smooth graphics, and plenty of replay value. It is definitely worth the money.

Cops & Robbers is available in the iTunes App Store for $2.99.

App Review: Glyder by Glu

glyder5 150x150 App Review: Glyder by GluGlyder by Glu is a fun way to relax and have a great time. Eryn has lost her way and needs you to help her get home.  There is a problem, though. The portal back to her home has been closed and needs crystals to open it up. Eryn does, however, have one tool.  She has a flying mechanism to help her collect the crystals. There are six different islands.  On the islands you collect crystals, view different landscapes, and unlock achievements.

You begin on a platform with a notification at the top informing you of the number of each colored crystal left in that area. Controlling your glyder is pretty straight-forward.  You tilt forward to go down, tilt back to go up, and tilt to one side or the other to turn. On each side of the screen are altitude and speed indicators. If you run out of speed or get too close to the ground, blinking indicators will tell you to pull up to gain altitude or dive down to gain speed. To collect the crystals, simply pass closely by them and they will be pulled towards you. There are three colors of crystals (75 of each) and booster crystals, which are red. If you crash into the ground, you will begin back on the beginning platform for the level.

In the game, there are achievements for you to complete. Some achievements include climbing high in the sky, reaching high speeds, and avoiding crashes for a certain period of time. On each island, there are landing platforms marked with a color and a letter. If you glide between two platforms of the same color within a certain time limit, you get a gold achievement.

Glyder is a great game with great controls and hours of fun in achievements and entertainment. It will keep you coming back for more.

Glyder is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store.
