Chillingo does a pretty good job at marketing the games in which they produce, and InkVaders also fell into that category.  Since Chillingo has produced so many hit apps, we usually pay attention to them when they make an announcement.  So when InkVaders came out, we were ready to give it a whirl.  If you are or were/are a fan of Zombieville USA by Mika Mobile then you’ll love InkVaders by Games Faction / Chillingo.  The two games are very similar in game play, controls and especially the gore factor.

InkVaders is a fast action shoot ‘em up game.  You advance forward and kill aliens as they run up on you from both directions or are beamed down next to you.  The more money you get, the bigger guns you can buy.  However, be careful, using up your ammo will result in you having to change guns (usually to a smaller gun).  As you walk along you can grab things out of the air that give you more money or pickup items from boxes (have to touch them) that give you various things such as ammo.  To put the game into “Rush” mode (super fast paced) just pickup one of the boxes with an “R” on it (some of the “?” marked boxes will also contain a “Rush”).

Graphics in InkVaders is unique.  I am reminded of paper-drawn cartoons where the foreground and background move at different speeds (to provide depth) but with obvious paper edges. However, I should stress, while they look cartooney they are super cool.  I found the graphics pleasing and fun and definitely added to the appeal of the game.

Controls are easy.  Since you are on a single plane and you advance forward/backward and fire or run the jet-pack there are limited controls.  You guessed it, forward/backwards/fire/jet-pak.  There’s also a weapon select in the top corner and a pause button.  Pressing the jet-pack button will allow you to do little ‘flights’ so that you can grab things flying in the air (give you money).

Upgrading guns or buying ammo only occurs when you come across a vending machine.  When you get there, touch the vending maching to go into purchase mode where you can select from more advanced guns (providing you have the money), ammo, health and fuel for the jet pack.  Since vending machines only come across every once in a while you must be ready to buy when they do.  Likewise, if you run out of ammo you’ll have to wait to buy more, so hopefully you have another weapon and ammo for it.

InkVaders by Games Faction / Chillingo is a fun, fast-paced, action, shooter game that will keep your interest and excitement going.  Whenever I start playing it I have a hard time putting it down.  If you like shoot ‘em up style games then you can’t go wrong with InkVaders.  When we last checked the game was on sale for $0.99, so hurry and get it before the price goes back up!

zombieville1 269x180 custom App Review: Zombieville USA by Mika MobileZombieville USA is a challenging multi-level game.  Armed with a gun you walk the streets of Zombieville collecting ammunition and money to upgrade your guns.  Along the way you run into zombies that try to kill you.  The only way to avoid them is to go into one of the houses lining the street.  The zombies actually seem to forget all about you when you disappear behind the door.  They will wander right past the house and disappear off  the screen.  If you can’t get to the door, though, your only hope is to kill them before they kill you.

You start the game with one gun and 100 bullets.  The limited supply of ammunition is a big challenge.  The only way to get more ammunition is by entering the houses along the street.  Be careful not to waste any shots.  You never know when you will find more.  I found myself in the position of being out of ammo and surrounded by zombies many many times.  You can also collect money from the houses and from killing zombies.  This money can be used at the end of each level to refill your life or to buy a bigger, more powerful gun.  Once again, you have to be very careful with how you use this resource as well.  So many times I wanted to upgrade my gun but didn’t have enough money to replenish my life and buy the gun.

The controls for the game are simple.  There are arrows at the bottom of the screen to move left or right.  Tapping in between the two arrows fires your gun.  Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the game, though.  I found this game to be extremely challenging.  It is an endless challenge to save enough bullets and money, not to mention the barrage of zombies that attack you.  Each successive level presents you with zombies that are harder and harder to kill.  There were times that I had 6 or more attacking me at once.  I don’t think there is any way to shoot that many zombies at once. The only other caution I would voice with this game is that it is not suitable for young children.  There is quite a lot of blood when you attack the zombies.  When you do kill them, you see their brains fly out.  Even though it is cartoonish, it is still pretty violent.

Zombieville USA is a well-designed game for all those up to the challenge.

Zombieville USA is on sale for $0.99 in the iTunes App Store.
